Like the other Transformers movies before it, Transformers: Age of Extinction contains all the essential elements that make for a successful blockbuster (action, characters, storylines, and interesting ideas). The problem is that most of these elements are not fully developed and realized to their fullest potential. This movie was capable of being an above-average experience, but Michael Bay decided to stick with his usual tricks, which is either a good or bad decision depending on who you ask along with the fact that this film is targeted toward a specific demographic (testosterone-fueled men and boys who are craving over-the-top action and special effects in their movies). The fourth in the series thankfully reinvents itself with a fresh upgrade in actors and story arc adding intriguing elements to the Transformers backstory but still falls victim to Michael Bay’s style over substance. The jokes are much less juvenile but it still uses painfully awful character stereotypes that plague the first three movies although more toned down. The introduction of the Land of the Lost pre-car era bots that turn into dinosaurs is kinda cool, my daughter loves that little twist. Who doesn’t like a Transformapterodactyl or Tyrannosaurabot? All of the Transformers movies require you to suspend logic and this one is no different. The thin plot lines are mostly there just to provide a catalyst for gratuitous alien-robot mass destruction on an endless budget.. The result isn’t intelligent but highly suitable for mindless entertainment.
