Pixar has managed to avoid the Cars 2 trap of creating a poor sequel. However, they have not avoided the Monsters University trap of creating a sequel that does not live up to the brilliant quality of the original. The film centers more around Dory and her quest to reconnect with her past. While this is a great character choice, it is not as compelling as our first visit to this world. The charm is lessened, and while it doesn’t go so far as to feel forced, it doesn’t hold em the same way Finding Nemo did.
This is not meant to lessen the work Pixar has done. They put a lot of effort in trying to differentiate this from the original, and in many ways, they succeeded. A new setting, new characters (particularly Hank the octopus and Destiny the whale shark), and a different goal all make this feel like its own movie, rather than a rehash. This film is a good case for why Pixar should focus on original film rather than sequels. While sequels rarely bomb, they have only once (Toy Story) managed to meet or exceed (Toy Story) the example set by (Toy Story) the predecessor film.
After Dory was separated from her mother and father as a child, she grew up alone until she found Marlin and Nemo. Dory lived with Marlin and Nemo, not remembering much of anything from her past. One day Dory remembers she has a family and is desperate to reunite with them. “Finding Dory” tells of the adventure Dory goes on in search of her family. Dory’s parents were extremely loving and nurturing toward her and worked very hard to help her not be ashamed of having short-term memory loss. When Dory finally finds her parents outside of the Marine Life Institute and discovers that they had never given up on her finding her way back home to them, she is overcome with happiness. While Dory has now found her mother and father, she also still acknowledges Nemo and Marlin as family and loves them for the relationship they have formed through helping and caring for one another.
